Transformative Era in the Automotive Industry

Transformative Era in the Automotive Industry

As the world looks to greener transportation, the industry must prepare and commit to innovation.

The automotive industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation as the world looks to greener modes of transportation. Transformation not only with the advancement of electric vehicles (EVs) and “elevated” driving experiences with autonomous cars, but to greater efficiency in the manufacturing process for these vehicles.

It’s a time of innovation and disruption for both the automotive supplier and OEM. The innovation is self-evident. EVs are already being developed to traverse greater distances with differentiated driving experiences through “smart” car technology. In fact, it’s estimated that by 2040, 55 percent of all new car sales and 33 percent of the global fleet will be electric, according to the Bloomberg New Finance Electric Vehicle 2018 report.

The disruption of the automotive industry truly rests in the technology that makes all of this possible. This includes new manufacturing environments that will have to be adaptable, flexible and agile to keep up with the projected growth of the electric vehicle market. In order to remain successful in the age of “smart” manufacturing, suppliers and OEMs alike must be able to meet rapidly changing market demands by maximizing current infrastructure through technological investment.

One of the challenges is balancing current vehicle demands and lines with the emerging EV influx. Overcoming this challenge relies on the industry’s agility and strategy. OEMs are continuing to analyze current production to determine which vehicle mix they need now in order to remain competitive and profitable while working toward creating future “green” models.

What this means for Tier 1 suppliers is that there’s a parallel path with the OEMs focused on profitability and volume. To remain on target, technological solutions that improve efficiency, traceability, data collection and reporting are essential. As innovating and investing today will prepare them for the urgency that is sure to come as the EV market continues to ramp up globally.

The future of the automotive industry requires an immersed partnership strategy between the OEM, supplier and technology provider. It takes all three working in unison to meet today’s needs while building for the future. Transformation is not coming, it’s here.
