Beyond Cyber: Operational Risks are Avoidable

When IT professionals think of operational risk, cybersecurity usually comes to mind first, and rightfully so. Cyberattacks continue to accelerate with no end in sight. As a result, within the last five years and across all industries, billions of dollars have been spent in not only recovering from cyberattacks, but to also mitigate such attacks.

Cybersecurity is not the only risk IT professionals should focus on as the only priority. In fact, operational threats come in many forms. Threats can include outdated hardware and software to inconsistent system maintenance to inadequate training of staff responsible for all system functionality. In the case of automotive suppliers any of these risks can cause operations to come to a halt. Resulting in delays for the OEMs, stiff penalties and irreparable harm to a supplier’s reputation.

Avoid Operational Risks

Proactive risk mitigation is critical. In no other instance does the proverb “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” ring truer. Such simple tasks as server maintenance, keeping hardware up to date and staying current on the most-recent versions of software can keep many issues from ever occurring. Since these simple tasks do not occur many times, inefficiency occur, ultimately ending in shut down.

Another area often overlooked is end user and system administrator proficiency and knowledge. Possessing a team of individuals that understands a system’s capabilities is important. However, having system administrators that can identify issues before they ever make an impact and keep systems and software up to date is irreplaceable in achieving consist uptime. This simply starts with an investment in training and a continuous program focused on expanding overall operational knowledge, not just system proficiency.

In the automotive manufacturing industry, operational threats are not always obvious; suppliers don’t have to put themselves in harm’s way. Consequently, the simplest advice is to prepare for tomorrow by being prepared today.  A start is to implement a recurring risk assessment and mitigation plan.
